Visiting next week and staying downtown. Someone told me the train is free in the core. Is that still true and where does the free zone start and end?

Yes, the downtown core is a free fare zone. Roughly City Hall to Downtown West.

It is free between City Hall and Downtown West-Kerby stations. Outside that you need a ticket.

Just hop on downtown, no ticket needed. The signage on the platforms shows the zone.
