New here and I keep seeing YYC everywhere. I assume it is the airport code but why do people use it for the whole city?

It is the airport code and locals just adopted it as shorthand for the city. Same way Vancouver is YVR.

Airport code that became a nickname. You will also see it on merch everywhere.
